LA MISION, BAJA MEXICO

A big highlight this spring was getting to run our first overnight camping & rock climbing trip with youth in the Sierra Juarez high desert (about 3 hours drive from La Misión). Unfortunately, a few of the youth dropped out last minute, but we still had an epic time with the boys that went, along with a couple of new friends from YWAM Rosarito, who not only gave of their time but also hooked it up with some rad photography and videography. We also got to meet up with local legend, John Smallwood, and our friend Sergio–a seasoned San Diego climber and representative for Acopa, a climbing shoe company based out of Mexico City. In addition to sharing his knowledge of the climbing area, Sergio blessed us with some brand new Acopa shoes for our programs!

It’s impossible to capture in just a few sentences all the parts that make a trip like this so impactful. There are of course the “Firsts”: the boys’ first time visiting the Sierra Juarez or climbing on granite, Nahum’s first time slacklining, Valdo’s first time sleeping in a tent … but as noteworthy as they are, these are just landmarks outlining the surface of the experience. The best moments lie in the hours logged together road tripping and getting lost on obscure dirt roads, appreciating the beauty of wildflowers lighting up a rugged landscape, laughing, sweating, and pushing through discomfort, chowing pasta around the fire after a long day climbing, and hanging out at camp with Cuervo (the nosy ranch burro.)

Most of the youth (and adults for that matter) in the community have never had a chance to learn how to swim. Sadly every year there are drownings at the local beach. In response to this, we’ve made swimming and water safety classes a primary activity focus this summer. A nearby pool has given us a discounted rate, allowing us to offer classes two days a week throughout the summer break. The feedback from youth and parents has been overwhelmingly positive! The August class is full, and we have a waiting list of kids hoping to join the next one.

Somehow we were also able to squeeze in a few youth climbing trips and Dustin logged in some personal time doing trail maintenance at our local crag. The past two months have been the most program heavy we’ve experienced so far but also some of the most rewarding. In the midst of all the activities, we’ve continued to seek out healthy rhythms, discovering new sides of ourselves we didn’t know existed. Jess’s Spanish has come a long way, and our ability to navigate the complex personal and professional dynamics in our marriage has grown as well. God is gracious and patient as He teaches us to trust His process–one of the richest and hardest lessons we’ve learned so far.

P.S. We have some big goals ahead! If it’s on your heart to join us on this adventure, check out the support page to see the options.

We appreciate you all!
Sending lots of hugs from Mexico,
Dustin & Jess

LIVINGSTON, ZAMBIA

EDUCATION

LIVINGSTON, ZAMBIA

Of all the places that deserve to have the title “the warm heart of Africa”.  Zambia is definitely a worthy contender.

God wants us to know Him and be known by Him. One of the greatest ways to discover who we are, why we are here and where all this is going – is by understanding the narrative of the bible.

The story is a never ending life discovery of God and His love for the world.

He longs to dwell with us.

What a privilege to be a part of sharing the riches of His Word in Livingston. We spent 10 days in this beautiful country with a community of people that long to learn.   Pastor Elis we met 8 years ago when we drove through Livingston on one of our African excursions.   We had been planning to return for years but the time never presented itself until now.

Future Hope International has an amazing youth program that raises up African leaders to serve and love on their local neighbors.  Aleph was invited to host a five day seminar in which we shared an overview of the bible – Genesis to Revelations.   When we speck about our Discovery Camps, this is what we cover.  It is a biblical perspective of the world from beginning to end.

Many people have read parts of the bible but most have never read it in its fullness.   Our goal is to make it less intimidating, applicable, and understandable.   In these sessions we help attendees understand the full narrative of God’s word by reading each book in the context it was written in.   The authors in the bible share a consistent story that covers 4,000 years of history of how God has interacted with man.

We hope that at the end of the camps that every student would come to a greater understanding of why God created the world, why he created us, where it all went wrong, what covenant is, why the tabernacle, why the whole sacrificial system, why Jesus, and what is our hope now, what do with all this information and what do we have to look forward to!?

It is very exciting stuff that we froth over sharing.   The truth is contagious.  Knowing our purpose and future hope is a message worth sharing!

We live in very exciting days where knowledge is accessible to everybody.  But we must be wary of where we get our information.  The God of the Bible and His instruction is our plumbline.  It has proven itself to be true through all the ages.  The words is clear, it is not murky, we just need to take the time to read it.

THE SEWING ROOM

SKILLS TRAINING

THE SEWING ROOM

Due to the sensitivity of this matter, I can not divulge too much about the identity or information of the individuals I worked with while in the Middle East. But I do want to boast that partnering with these beautiful women has been one of my life’s most endearing and inspiring experiences.

The Syrian Civil War was horrific and surviving it came at an immeasurable loss. This woman kept her head high and endured. The hope of better days and staying together as a family fueled her survival.

Being able to train her, partner together and find the avenues for her products is how we could assist. She has taken every opportunity that came her way and now her small business is starting to grow locally.

If you would like to support this small business we are currently fundraising for a sewing room.

This amazing women has 10 children between ages 2 and 17 of whom 2 have disabilities. Living in a 2-bedroom-house in a small village,  there is no space for her industrial machine.  If we could contribute to the rent of a sewing room, she would be able to earn enough money that in the future her family could afford a bigger home and then have the sewing room in her home.   This would give her every opportunity to work between changing diapers, cooking and helping her kids study.

Thank you for your generosity!

LEARNING TO SEW FOR A DEEPER PURPOSE

I will be heading to Jordan next month on April 3rd, 2023.

My attention recently was captured by a documentary I saw on BBC about Domestic Abuse in Jordan.    It is an issue we see around the world but especially in the Arab world.  Domestic violence has increased dramatically with Covid when families were isolated at home. Jordan was the first Arab country to enforce a law against violence towards women in 2008.  Even with this law in place it is still very dangerous for women to speak out about what goes on at home in a society where men, fathers and brothers have legal rights over women.

Only 18% of women have jobs in Jordan.

There was one cases scenario in this BBC documentary that shared a story about a girl raped by her father and then when she told her family they beat her, breaking her arms and legs.  She left home when she could and is now trying to make it on her own.  But again, in a society that is not pro-women working – it has been extremely difficult for her to survive.

The women I have worked with in Jordan are not (as far as I know) domestically abused but there is still a great need to educate the women on their rights as human beings and women created in God’s His image and designed to do works He has set out for them to do.

Even in a home or a country that does not allow the same freedoms as most of the west – my hope is that through the work I do, these women can find purpose in providing for themselves and their families. Giving them these tools to become independent, is a vital resource for them and their families.  This I hope would give them the courage to seek help and if necessary leave home should abuse occur to take their children to a safer living situation.

My hope is that the women that I get to have time with on this next trip will in turn teach more women tailoring skills and also build their own businesses.  The country of Jordan has an emphasis on workmanship and artisans.  Jordan is still not as industrialized as the West because people still hold onto traditions and customs which are beautiful.

Would you pray with me.

  • For outlets to distribute the products locally.
  • For bridges to build between the Syrian women and the Jordanian women.
  • For opportunities to share about Yahweh, the God who created them, loves them, and can and will restore all things.
  • For safety for the women I will be working with, safety for Elbie & her team, and my safety.
  • For the land of Jordan to come to know the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob as the one true God.

Thank you for sending me out!  I am looking forward to whatever the Father has in store.

EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

education

THE GRADUATES

We are so proud of our Graduates.

Over covid the board of education postponed graduation all over the country.  This was extremely devastating for many students that had work so hard to achieve their degrees.  For many of these students, they would be the first in their families ever to go to University.  So you can only imagine,  not to be able to walk was heart wrenching.  But Nelson Mandela University allowed all of the students that didn’t have the opportunity over the last two years to finally walk.

Three of our young women from Aleph received either an Honors or a Bachelors Degree.

Yes, you may recognise Nancy face, she has recently recieved another degree in Honors. Nancy Mwedzi received her Honors in Media Communication, Tsungi Muzenda received her Bachelors in Civil Engineering, and Nikita Vena in Communication.

This achievement for three of our Aleph students is an accomplishment.  Especially in South African where only 6% of the population having university degrees,  6% had diplomas and 3.4% have technical and vocational education and training (TVET) certificates.

In real numbers, just over 1.7 million people in the country held degrees. These degrees include bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, Master’s degrees and PhDs.

The country has seen an increase in the number of citizens with matric (high school diplomas), which moved from 24.7% to 32.1% last year.  These numbers are still extremely low and disheartening but we are investing in one student at a time.

We have are continuing with our scholarship program for high school students in Jeffreys Bay. Currently Rushaan and Indiphile are doing extraordinarily well and progressing wonderfully through their high school grades. Nayla Davids completed her university degree in education through Aleph’s financial support and is now starting work as a teacher. We are so grateful to be able to see these opportunities available to these extremely talented students.

Please continue to pray for South Africa as a nation and for our education department to be held accountable in taking care of the future leaders of this nation.

SEWING & DESIGN FOUNDATIONS

skills training

sewing & design foundations

In early October I got to spend a week with 15 students that were a part of a local program called Pulse.  Pulse helps underprivileged communities through a holistic approach by helping address their physical, emotional, metal and spiritual needs.

Within a six week program Pulse invests in students self confidence by focusing on various skills, which enable them to understand that they have a calling and purpose to add value to this world.

By establishing self- confidence, the students believe in themselves and understand themselves better, which encourages them to use their personalities and giftings to contribute to their communities.

We have seen that students who have attended life skills programs like Pulse or  Aleph Surfs be transformed as people.   Resulting in a change in their behavior, gaining a positive attitude on life and motivation to empower themselves and others around them.

Within the 6 week program I got one of the weeks to teach sewing basics.  This included training in basic flat patterns that could be made off of their own clothing, hand sewing and alterations, as well as how to use a basic sewing machine.

I am constantly reminded that women are the same universally.  We all like to feel beautiful and wear a beautiful clothing and there is something special about being able to make your own.  At the end of the week many of the women could make clothes for themselves and their children.  They can utilize these sewing skills to empower themselves by making a business from home creating school uniforms, altering clothes or whatever their creative spirits design.

It was an amazing time & we look forward to partnering with Pulse again.  Here are some highlights!  Hope you enjoy!

MAXIXE, MOZAMBIQUE

discovery camp

maxixe, mozambique

The Discovery Camp in Mozambique was one we will never forget.

We stepped into Mozambican culture where song, dance and rhythm set the tone for each day.

Mozambique hugs the coastline of East Africa just above South Africa.  It is a tropical paradise with a landscape covered with palm trees and sand dunes by turquoise waters.  Students gathered from the Mozambique cities of Maxixe, Inhambane and Zavale. Cities that lie on the southern border of the coast.

We had been to this area once before.  We had hoped to start an International Christian Surfers chapter in Tofino, but God had other plans for us.

Through our prior travels throughout southern Africa, the Lord gave us a partnership with an organization I knew well growing up in the states called Young Life.  Their focus is on campus ministry and they are growing rapidly in Mozambique.

One of the Young Life chapter’s is at Maxixe University. This is where we gathered with 30 university students for a Discovery Camp just this past month.   Our Discovery Camp was filled with lots of fun games and activities.  Our educational focus was an overview of the Bible that gave them a strong understanding of its timeline.

We took them on a deep dive into The Story of all stories, God’s plan of restoration as told in the Bible.. Many of the students had a background in the Bible, but for many this was all new.

We were extremely encouraged and excited to see how the students were totally engaged with us and were ravenous to learn.  They had never heard the story of The Bible as a whole.  They just knew little snippets.  They never were told how they all linked together to tell us of our beginning, our restoration, and our future.

We had intentional discussions and the students had great questions throughout the week. The students really wanted to know God’s truth and chose to wrestle with their place in it all.

It was moving and powerful. At the end of the week ,10 students responded to God’s story, realizing this was the Truth and that they wanted to ‘dwell with God again’.  We were so honored to pray with them to invite Jesus into their hearts as their God, King and Savior.

The days didn’t end at the camp location.  We visited villages, homes and churches.   Wherever we went, this group would share about what they learned and experienced. It felt like we had come into a ripe harvest!  They were all ready to receive, apply and pass it on!

Each participant was given a Bible. If they had one already, we challenged them to share the story and gift the Bible to someone else.

What a privilege it was to be a part of God’s body and his movement in the nations.   Personally for us, Rehgert and I were given clear instruction on what to teach and the resources to do it with.  Then to be invited through Young Life to share this with their 30 university students in Mozambique in an area that we had a sense we wanted to go back to was very rewarding.

These Mozambicans were some of the most joy filled people we have ever met. Everyone used their skills set  whether they were English teachers, plumbers, etc.  to influence their society to bring people back to their Creator and how He designed for us to live . They lived in community and worship.  They gave where there was need and spent every evening in prayer and worship.   They wanted to partner with God and go to their fellow Mozambicans that did not know the love of God.  It was moving.

We want to shout out a BIG THANK YOU to Ardex our translator, Virgilio our worship man,  and Elvio the team leader extraordinaire.

Also, big THANKS to each of you who have prayerfully or financially supported Aleph to make this experience happen. People are changed forever and eternity.

ISRAEL . THE ARUKAH EXPERIENCE

TRAVEL ISRAEL

THE ARUKAH EXPERIENCE

Join us for an extraordinary experience that will change the way you see the world and read the Bible.    We will travel through the white washed streets of Jerusalem, hike the desert of Judea, and sit in the meadows of Galilee.  You will get to soak in the views and scents all over Israel while enjoying the energy and taste that this unique country has to offer.

Our hope is that whoever comes on this tour will grasp a better understanding of the scriptures.  We want people to get excited about God!  The One who created heaven and earth and that is still active in every detail today.  He is fulfilling the scriptures as we breathe.  We need to align ourselves with God’s time clock and with his heart.

Did you know 83% of the bible is about Israel.  If it is, then don’t you think we should know what God is up to currently with this extremely tiny country.  We want people to consider the scriptures’ relevance for today while exploring and celebrating ancient and modern Israel.  You will go home equipped to study the scriptures on your own and prepare you and your community for the King’s arrival.

We believe that God is not finished with Israel and the people He made covenant with in the land of Israel all the way in Genesis 12:2.    We want to take you on a tour that shares the heart of God from Genesis to Revelations.  The hope that he gave to the world through this little nation.   We see through History the commitment of our God to restore the people to the land.  But it wasn’t for the greatness of the land.  It was for His name sake.  Israel is where restoration for all mankind started.  Where the Hope of a Kingdom with no tears, no pain, no more death would come forth!

We invite you to join us in the Holy land. The land that will help you understand your existence because you’re God destined you to know and understand him.

DURBAN FLOODS

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

DURBAN FLOODS

Masibambisani is the Zulu term for togetherness. In the context of this incredible citizen led organization – it means keeping our promise together. A promise to stand together in good times or bad. A promise to be there for one another.

After witnessing the devastation of the floods, we knew we needed to go and help our neighbors. We met Elizabeth through the crisesmap app where various individuals or NGO’s can make their needs known during a specific crisis. We knew we could help with providing filters for clean drinking water, so we reached out.

This crisis has brought strangers together.

Before starting anything we sat around in a circle and got to know each other.   I asked the question: What has led each one of you to become servant leaders and serve your community? The unifying theme that stood out – ‘I became better once I learned to give’. Everyone present had many struggles and challenges, but this group’s power lied in their ability to show compassion and love while the outside world gives very little of it.

George, the husband of Elizabeth, shares how he has been running with this vision since 1993. Almost 30 years of selfless care. An absolute legend.

Papa and Mama as they are affectionately known to all that come through Masibambisane’s doors, have converted their own house into an open door, 24 hour place of peace, refuge and hope. It’s an education centre, a counselling centre, a place where people are fed. It’s a place that gives nutrition for the body and the soul. They even run a church from here.

As we share our presentation in this space, our team has this overwhelming sense that we are in the presence of greatness. A greatness not paraded by ego or showmanship, but rather found in the quiet consistent proverbial washing of hands and feet which is rarely seen by others.

One of our favorite moments during the training was to hear Nkosi say ‘I am now empowered to be a clean water advocate and specialist!’.

A few days later we received some videos of how the volunteer leaders are going around distributing and teaching others on how the water filter works. It is encouraging to witness this and it spurs us on to purchase and send a lot more filters up to Durban, South Africa.
